Finding Ways to Serve
At times big projects pop up like when we built the building and many pitched in to help. And once a year we host a big Shoes 4 Kids event. Every week, however, there are "big little things" we encourage everyone to take part in. For instance our women get involved with preparing communion and our men get involved with serving it. Many take part in being a greeter, assisting teachers with kids classes, and caring for the building.
Everyone is encouraged to use the God-given gifts and abilities they have to serve others both inside and outside the church gathering. You may have the gift of mercy and want to use it to visit the elderly. You may have the gift of service and want to use it to make meals for the sick. You may be gifted with hospitality and like to invite church members and others into your home and feed them. When it comes to serving personally as a Christian, don't wait to be asked, "just do it." If you want to organize and lead a ministry for the church as a whole visit with one of our elders about it and most likely you'll be given the go ahead and maybe even some financial support too!
Select members who are qualified to be the best of examples to the other believers in Christ will be asked to take on roles in leadership and teaching within the church body. If you are gifted in that area, you will sooner or later be identified and called upon, but don't wait around for a task like that. Jesus himself said he came to serve and the greatest are those who serve. No task is unimportant.
Most importantly, we encourage everyone to serve by spreading the good news about Jesus and his church with others every week. The smallest things like inviting people to church and sharing your testimony about why you love Jesus are the biggest things of all!
